Hong Kong youngster Lo Yuen-lai said he wanted to embrace greater challenges, thus he quit his job in Hong Kong and traveled north to Qianhai on the Chinese mainland for career development.
Lo works as the product manager and CEO’s assistant of Shenzhen Baimai Technology Co. Ltd., a high-tech firm at the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneur Hub. The company applies visual image algorithms and general visual technology to the high-end manufacture industry to solve problems such as defect detection.
“The AI (artificial intelligence) technology and algorithms-related work have huge market potential on the mainland, which is an opportunity for young people to work for,” Lo said, adding that the career path and industry layout in Hong Kong are relatively narrow and limited. As a result, he quit the job he found in Hong Kong after graduating in 2019 from the University of Manchester with a bachelor’s degree in international business and finance.
When Lo first came to Qianhai, he was impressed by Qianhai’s avant-garde taste and dense skyscrapers. In addition, the housing and employment subsidies offered by the Qianhai authority helped alleviate Lo’s financial pressure.
As a Hong Kong youngster, Lo is also more competitive in the employment market on the mainland as he has better cross-cultural communication skills and can smoothly switch between Putonghua (standard Chinese), Cantonese and English.
“The technology of our company is also being applied in some foreign countries including Indonesia and Germany. The language advantage makes it easier for me to communicate with the engineers there and guide them for technology operations,” Lo said.
Lo said he is satisfied with his working and living experience on the mainland and will recommend more Hong Kong youngsters to come and work in Shenzhen, or other cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
