More than 20 million yuan worth of natural gas was traded online at the Shenzhen Natural Gas Trading Center, which was inaugurated at the Qianhai Mercantile Exchange (QME) on Nov. 26.

Huang Min, secretary of the Party committee of the Qianhai Cooperation Zone Authority, and Li Xiaojia, CEO of the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd. (HKEx), unveiled the trading center at the inauguration ceremony. Representatives of some 50 natural gas companies such as China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), PipeChina and Total, attended the event.

Guo Ziping, director of Shenzhen Municipal Development and Reform Commission, said at the ceremony that the operation of the trading center at QME is of great significance to the country's market-oriented reform on the natural gas industry, and is another important achievement of cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

“The center is conducive to build a fair, open and flexible natural gas trading platform, help the country accelerate the establishment of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy supply system, and boost the quality development of the energy industry,” Guo said.

According to Li, the trading center will help address the problems and bottlenecks that have been faced during the trading process of natural gas in the country, set up a market-oriented pricing system of the energy sector, and serve the real economy.

The QME is the only spot commodity trading platform established by HKEx on the Chinese mainland.
