A number of scientific instruments were available for lease at the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneur Hub (E-hub) on Oct. 23, attracting some 30 startups based in the E-hub.

The instruments are from the city’s large scientific instrument sharing platform, operated by the Shenzhen Municipal Science, Technology and Innovation Commission. The platform has been set up with an aim to help Shenzhen’s high-tech companies reduce research and development (R&D) costs by sharing the usually expensive scientific equipment, and to establish a channel for resource sharing between enterprises and scientific research institutions.

Guo Feng, director of the Shenzhen Large-scale Scientific Instrument and Facilities Resource Sharing Management Center, explained to the audience at the event the functions of the platform and the application procedure.

Two E-hub-based startups made inquiries about potential cooperation with the platform.

Currently, the instrumemt-sharing platform has 475 registered instrument management units, with 9,101 sets of scientific instruments, including analytical equipment, measuring instruments, electronic measuring equipment and medical diagnostic instruments, available for lease. The total value of the equipment exceeds 7.8 billion yuan (US$1.16 billion), according to Guo.

He said the instruments can meet the R&D requirements of 21 industries such as biomedicine, electrical and electronic engineering, chemistry and chemical engineering, environmental protection and industrial machinery.
