A grand gathering celebrating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SEZ) was held at the Qianhai International Conference Center Wednesday morning.

The gathering was attended by 826 members from the municipal and provincial governments, local enterprises, grassroots units, colleges and foreign institutions in China, who are closely related to the construction of Shenzhen.

Xi Jinping, Chinese President and general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made an important speech at the gathering.

Cadres, enterprises employees and people from all walks of life in Qianhai listened to Xi's speech through live broadcast and expressed their confidence in Qianhai‘s further development.

Hong Weimin, chief liaison officer for Hong Kong Affairs of the Qianhai authority said that he felt the great responsibility and mission he carries as a participant of Shenzhen-Hong Kong cooperation. “We will make all-out efforts to attract more people and companies from Hong Kong to join in the overall development of Qianhai, Shenzhen and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.” he said.

Hong Konger Kuo Wai-keung, who was received by President Xi in Qianhai in 2018 as a representative of Hong Kong entrepreneurs, said that Xi’s speech encouraged him to share Qianhai and Shenzhen’s favorable policies for entrepreneurship and his entrepreneurial experience with more Hong Kong youngsters to attract them to pursue a career or start up a company in Qianhai and Shenzhen.

Li Nanqing, secretary of the Party committee and president of WeBank, said that he has witnessed the major financial innovations launched by the city over the past four decades. “In President Xi’s speech, I once again feel the CPC Central Committee’s high expectations for Shenzhen’s reform and opening up, innovation and development. WeBank will take the lead to assist Shenzhen build into a global financial and technology innovation center, and make new and greater contributions to China's financial reform and opening up." Li said.
