The installation of a gauzy, 10,000-square-meter glass roof for the Qianhai International Conference Center was completed March 10. It took only 60 days to install the roof.

The translucent roof of the conference center resembles the tile roof of a traditional Lingnan-style building, according to the project’s design team.

The first building in Qianhai to use a color-glazed glass roof, the conference center blends in with its surrounding environment.

The center’s interior design and decoration are inspired by famous Cantonese musical score “Rosy Clouds Chasing the Moon” and integrates traditional Chinese culture and modern aesthetics.

The center has also set a number of architectural records. The tiered glass roof, larger than a standard soccer filed, is the largest in China. The curved roof consists of thousands of pieces of stained glass with four different transmittances.

“The color-glazed glass is twice the size of ordinary glass, which means fewer plates are needed, so it has better waterproof performance,” said a staff member with the China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Corp., the project contractor.

The contractor has used 3-D scanning robots to obtain precise data analysis during the roof installation.

The center will soon commence the installation of indoor equipment and fine decoration and is expected to be put into service in August this year.
