MAWAN Container Port’s TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) throughput reached 1.86 million units between January and July, up by 49.7% year on year, customs data showed Tuesday.

The container port, the country’s first fully automated port upgraded from a traditional port, is also the first 5G-based smart port in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Since it was put into operation at the end of last year after upgrading, the port had opened 28 new routes and its TEU handling capacity kept increasing. It has five berths that can accommodate the world’s largest container ships.

The port, powered by advanced technologies, showed great increase in customs clearance and turnover at its cargo yards. The time container lines stay at port has been cut by 32.6% and the time each container stays at the yard has been cut by an average of 33.9%.

Mawan port, along with Chiwan and Dachan Bay container terminals, opened a total of 18 routes under the GBA Combined Port program. The ports have handled a total of 170,000 TEUs, becoming the first choice of exporters like home appliance giant Midea Group. Other technologies such as the Beidou GPS and artificial intelligence offer real-time video and analysis over personnel, vehicle and container flows in the area, spot risks and improve the port’s risk-handling capabilities.
