HK startups in Qianhai resume work whilst fighting epidemic

Hong Kong-funded startups and institutions in the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneur Hub (E-hub) resumed work Monday whilst taking a series of anti-epidemic measures to prevent the potential spread of the coronavirus.

Zebras, a startup incubator at the E-hub, has taken several measures to implement the municipal government’s instructions on epidemic prevention and control made on Sunday after resuming work Monday.

According to Sara Tao, Zebras’ general manager and CEO, the incubator postponed the holding of a startup acceleration camp event, which was scheduled to be held this month. In addition, they specially purchased online meeting software to avoid gathering of personnel for safety reasons.

“The enterprises in incubation are very cooperative and understanding to the city’s anti-epidemic measures, and they have made huge efforts to let their businesses and project process unaffected during the 7-day work from home. Zebras will also do our best to help the startup teams alleviate difficulties such as collecting and reporting their needs to the Qianhai authority and expanding their business channels through activities like online markets for product demonstration,” Tao said.

Yu Gwong-tou, founder of Cooh Science Biology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., spoke highly of the city’s anti-epidemic measures. “The temporary lockdown has effectively curbed the spread of the virus in a short period of time, which allows us to resume normal work and production,” Yu said, adding that he has arranged half of his staff to the company’s joint laboratory in Dongguan, so as to reduce cross-city travel for employees and make sure normal operations of his two offices.

“The E-hub has set up a free nucleic acid testing site in the park, which is quite convenient for us to do daily check. The entrepreneurial park has also temporarily banned visitors from entering, which makes us feel safe,” he said.

Xian Kelong, technological service engineer of an intelligent building solution company at the E-hub, said the company’s operation was barely affected during the lockdown period.

“We have get used to working online or working from home, because many of our colleagues are in Hong Kong, and everything has been dealing with through online cooperation. The lockdown didn’t affect my work and life. Instead, it makes me feel safe,” he said.
