The first batch of 24 boxes of test kits and protective garments were loaded on a truck and sent from Qianhai to Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint yesterday to help combat the new wave of COVID-19 in Hong Kong.

The items were donated by Hong Kong-funded companies and startup groups registered in Qianhai, who teamed up Tuesday to raise money and collect medical supplies to help alleviate Hong Kong’s shortage of certain necessities.

More supplies and goods will be sent from Qianhai to Hong Kong in the next few days, according to Wallace Lau, one of the donors and executive vice president of CBH-HATCHSPACE, an incubation platform that settled in Qianhai in 2018.

“We have noticed a surge in COVID-19 infections in the past days and we are worried about the shortage of medical supplies for frontline workers, so we discussed with our fellow entrepreneurs in Qianhai and decided to initiate a donation for our compatriots in Hong Kong,” said Lau.

“With the help of Qianhai Authority, we have managed to send the donations to the Federation of Hong Kong Chu Chow Community Organizations in Hong Kong for distribution in a timely manner.”

Digital entertainment platform iDreamsky donated 1 million yuan (US$158,105) yesterday to help Hong Kong in its battle against the pandemic.

According to Jeffrey Lyndon Ko, co-founder and president of iDreamsky, the donation will be managed by Hong Kong’s Police Welfare Fund (PWF) for purchasing medical protective supplies for frontline workers.

“Although I’m in Shenzhen, as a native Hong Konger, my heart will always be with Hong Kong. I believe we will win the fight against the virus!” Ko said, adding that the company will maintain close contact with PWF to provide further assistance when needed.

The donation was initiated by six companies and organizations in the area.
