The cooling tower near the Railway Park Station of Metro Line 5 was recently relocated to the rooftop of Shenzhen International Qianhai Yijing Plaza, to make way for other public facilities.

This is one of the plans that an international consulting firm commissioned by the Qianhai Authority has mapped out for the integration development of Metro stations with their surrounding areas in Qianhai.

As the land parcels around the Railway Park Station were not developed at the time the station was under construction, according to the plan, supportive facilities like cooling towers and ventilation pavilions were temporarily built on the land next to the station exits to ensure the operation of the rail transit as scheduled. The temporary facilities were designed to be relocated when needed to make way for the development of the land parcels around the station.

The other plan on the integration development was to develop the land parcels simultaneously with the construction of the Metro stations, like the Guiwan Station of Metro Line 5. The cooling tower and ventilation pavilions of this Metro station were built in the basement of the China Resources Qianhai Center complex, which was also under construction at the time.

The two plans were worked out in 2015 by the international consulting firm as commissioned by the Qianhai Authority to find a solution for the integration development of rail traffic, surrounding buildings and underground spaces. This would be needed when construction started on the second phases of Metro lines 5 and 9 that would run through the free trade area, as each station is to be equipped with facilities such as cooling towers and ventilation pavilions; these facilities are normally constructed on roads, sidewalks and green belts, taking up much public space.

In the future, more than 30 Metro exits, cooling towers and ventilation pavilions of Metro Lines 5 and 9 will be relocated and undergo facelifts to integrate into the surrounding buildings and environments.
