Experts from several water conservation institutions nationwide and university scholars conducted a heated discussion on water conservation methods at a forum held at the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone yesterday afternoon.

Jointly hosted by the Shenzhen Water Conservation Promotion Association and the Greater Bay Area Youth Development Association, the forum aims to enhance public awareness of water conservation and help Shenzhen build a model city for water conservation.

Ma Lihui, associate researcher from the Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University, said Shenzhen is abundant in precipitation but is short of surface water resources.

“In 2019, the annual sewage treatment volume in Shenzhen was 1.95 billion cubic meters, most of which were discharged into the rivers without reutilization. The government needs to invest in lots of technologies and facilities to fully utilize this part of water,” he said.

Xu Hourong, a professor from the Water Affairs Research and Training Center of the Ministry of Water Resources, highlighted the importance of legislation and talents in water conservation.

“The city should establish a complete system of laws and regulations in terms of water conservation, which has been incorporated into local regulations by most of the developed countries in the world.

In addition, to form a professional team of talents for water conservation is of equal importance. Talents are the cornerstone for every industry and we have a lot of work to do in raising the public’s awareness to save water,” Xu said.

Chen Junwei, president of the Shenzhen Water Conservation Promotion Association, also shared with the audience his view on water conservation. He said that saving water is more of forming a reasonable water consumption habit rather than cutting water demands.

“The public should try to use less water in their daily life,” Chen said.
