More exchange activities are needed for the patriotism education for young people in Hong Kong and Macao, according to the consensus of some 20 education experts from around the country who attended an online seminar in Qianhai on March 12.

The education experts from Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macao and Shenzhen had an in-depth discussion on how to strengthen patriotism education for young people in Hong Kong and Macao through video conferencing.

The seminar was aimed to popularize the “patriots governing Hong Kong” principle and a draft decision on improving Hong Kong’s electoral system adopted by the National People’s Congress, the country’s top legislature.

Young people in Hong Kong and Macao should be encouraged to visit the mainland through exchange activities, which will give them opportunities to look closer at the country’s development and strengthen their love for the motherland, the seminar heard.

Hung Wai-man, honorary chairman of the Y.Elites Association in Hong Kong said: “To implement the ‘patriots governing Hong Kong’ principle, we should let young people in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan understand the country in a comprehensive way, and thus enhance their sense of national identity.”

Wu Kejian, former director of the Hong Kong Education Bureau and honorary president of the GBA Education Development Association, said that the implementation of the principle is a good opportunity to promote patriotism education for Hong Kong youngsters and is conducive to cultivate talents for future Hong Kong leadership.

The seminar was directed by the Qianhai Authority and was jointly hosted by the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneur Hub and the Shenzhen Ordinary Hero Foundation.
