Hong Kong entrepreneur Dixon Lau, founder of the Qianhai-based Jinfrey International (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd., said that he wants to create an exchange platform for people across the Shenzhen River through organizing a variety of music activities.

He said he found that cultural exchanges will enhance mutual understanding of people on the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong and hence help deepen Shenzhen-Hong Kong cooperation after spending the past two years bringing Hong Kong food brands to the mainland since he set up Jenfrey International in Shenzhen in 2018.

Hanjuku Kobo and Fruttato Gelato were two of the Hong Kong food brands that Lau’s company has introduced to the mainland.

“Now I want to bring some Hong Kong music products and activities to the mainland, letting young people in Shenzhen and Hong Kong exchange through music. Hong Kongers will also better understand the mainland and find suitable opportunities for their self-development,” Lau said, adding that his company will shift to organizing music events in Qianhai as its main business.

According to Lau, his decision to start a new business in Shenzhen was largely based on his knowledge about Shenzhen and the mainland market that he gained through his previous jobs.

He traveled frequently between Hong Kong and Shenzhen for bulk commodity trading in a Hong Kong-based foreign trade company back in 2015 after he quit his well-paid job at Wells Fargo in New York City.

In 2017, Lau set up a logistics company in Hong Kong, offering product packaging services. His company has dealt with a large number of orders from its mainland clients.

Qianhai caught his attention during his commutes between the two cities between 2015 and 2018.

“Qianhai is a perfect place for Hong Kong entrepreneurs, who can also enjoy a number of favorable policies such as low-rent talent housing and office rent subsidy,” he said.

In 2019, he relocated his company to the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneur Hub. “Using culture as a bridge, I want to contribute to the cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong,” he said.

Lau graduated from the Bernard M. Baruch College of the City University of New York with a bachelor’s degree in finance and business administration in 2014.
