Hong Kong entrepreneur Hui Ho said he set up a branch company in Qianhai to tap the bigger market on the Chinese mainland.

“The mainland market potential is so much bigger than that in Hong Kong, while the operational costs such as office rent and raw materials are relatively lower than that in Hong Kong,” he said, adding that the main business of his company has been shifted to Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Foshan. “So we opened a branch office in Shenzhen.”

Hui said the supportive policies that Qianhai offers to Hong Kong investment and overseas talent have been another attraction for him to set up a branch company here two months ago. “The deepening cooperation between Qianhai and Hong Kong makes us believe that Qianhai is the right place for us.”

According to Hui, the startups in the accelerators of Qianhai will share information, equipment and labor with each other. The Qianhai Authority has also regularly held exchange activities for companies looking for connections. The entrepreneurship-friendly environment in Qianhai has offered Hui a lot of help.

When Hui was in his fourth year of Ph.D. study at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in September 2019, he set up the LaSense Technology Co. Ltd in Hong Kong with his tutor Ren Wei. Hui’s self-developed high-precision sensor stood out from other projects in the Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (2020-2021) and received an entrepreneurial subsidy of HK$700,000 (US$90,300) from the Hong Kong government. Hui was also invited to settle his company at the Hong Kong Science Park, a high-tech R&D base in Hong Kong.

In December last year, Hui’s high-sensitivity gas online sensor project won the top prize of the Sixth Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. His company’s sensors for measuring ventilation direction in buildings also helped the Hong Kong COVID-19 containment efforts.

“We are full of expectations for the company’s future on the mainland and we look forward to more policy assistance from Qianhai,” Hui said.
