Smart self-service restaurant opens in Qianhai

A smart restaurant was open for business in Qianhai, serving a variety of dishes at prices up to 20 percent cheaper than the market, according to its operator.

Located on the B1 floor of Excellence Intown shopping mall in the Guiwan area, the FamilyToGo smart restaurant is a self-service food court where diners take what they want to eat and are charged for the actual amount of food they take.

According to Ye Henian, chairman of Hongjun Group, the operating subsidiary of Excellence Group’s deli department, each serving tray at the restaurant has been microchipped to identify the amount of the food placed on it.

There is an electronic scale board installed in front of each dish in the restaurant. Diners are advised to scan the QR code on each serving tray with their smart phone before going pick the food of their taste. They should put their serving tray on the electronic board before taking food to the tray. The amount of food and its cost will be immediately shown on the nearby screen, on which the name of the dish and its unit price are displayed.

Diners can pay for the meal on their smart phone without lining up at the cashier like in the conventional restaurants.

Up to 150 kinds of dishes including Cantonese dim sum, Western food and desserts are served in the smart restaurant at prices 15 to 20 percent cheaper than other restaurant. Ye said the low prices were made possible as the large purchase amount lowers the costs as his company is operating more than 500 such smart restaurants in China, mostly in Guangdong Province and East China. The FamilyToGo in Qianhai is the first of its kind in Shenzhen, while 20 other new restaurants will be opened across Shenzhen this year, Ye said.
