Construction completed on main structure of No. 5 cooling system

Construction on the main structure of the No. 5 cooling system, reported to be the largest centralized cooling project in Asia, was completed Dec. 31.

The system, which is underneath the west bank of the Qianhai Bay, covers a total floor area of 32,500 square meters.

Dubbed “the supersized air conditioner of Qianhai,” the centralized cooling system adopts the electric and ice-storage refrigeration technologies to provide cooled air to buildings of a total floor area of 2.7 million square meters in Qianhai. The annual cooling capacity is expected to reach 60,000 tons of coolant.

The project, one of the 10 underground cooling systems in Qianhai, was constructed by the China Railway 20th Bureau Group Co. Ltd. The 10 cooling facilities, after they are all put into service, will help save 130 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, equivalent to the amount generated by burning 16,000 tons of coal, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 130,000 tons.
