Mobile kitchen serves safe food in Qianhai

A mobile kitchen was put into use at a ceremony marking the start of a construction project in Qianhai on Dec. 22.

The container-turned-kitchen is an effort by the contractor of the construction project, the Fourth Engineering Bureau of the China State Construction Engineering Group Co. Ltd. (CSCEC) Shenzhen Head Office, to provide safe food to its workers.

The mobile kitchen is equipped with standardized kitchenware to process food. It can be expanded in accordance to each service occasion, such as the number of diners and the size of venue available.

All kitchen utensils in the kitchen are manufactured and assembled in a factory, before the whole kitchen is delivered to the place designated by the contractor. It only takes two weeks to produce a standardized mobile kitchen, costing half the time needed for constructing a conventional kitchen.

Environmental protection and recyclability are two major features of the kitchen. According to Yan Jing, chairman of the CECES Shenzhen Head Office, the easy-to-move facilities of the kitchen are made from recyclable, food-grade stainless steel. A grease trap is installed outside the kitchen to hold oil waste.

“Previously, the workers had to purchase food from random vendors near the construction site, thus food safety could not be guaranteed,” said Yan. “With the mobile kitchen, sanitation is no longer an issue.”
