Traffic in and out of Qianhai will greatly enhance after the construction of two major underwater passages are completed around 2024.

The 8.05-kilometer Mawan Cross-sea Passage will connect Qianhai’s Mawan area with Dachan Bay of Bao’an District.

Starting at the intersection of Mawan Boulevard and Yueliangwan Boulevard in Mawan and ending at the intersection of Dachan Bay Tollgate of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway, Jinwan and Xixiang boulevards in Bao’an District, the passage will consist of a ground-level section and an underground section. The 6.28-kilometer-long underground section will be a two-way-six-lane urban highway with a designated speed of 80 kilometers per hour.

It is the first super-large underwater tunnel in Shenzhen, according to the city’s transportation bureau. The passage is expected to ease traffic pressure in Qianhai with freight traffic being diverted away from the coastline. It will also enhance the urban environment and landscape of Qianhai.

Advanced technologies and techniques such as the Beidou GPS, BIM 5D, and DJP (down-the-hole jet grouting pile) have been applied to ensure safety during the project’s construction.

The other project will connect Qianhai with the east-west Nanping Expressway. An underwater interchange will be built to link the Qianhai section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway with the west extension of the Nanping Expressway, which extends all the way to Pingshan District in the east part of Shenzhen.

Water circulation and the ecological landscape of the Qianhai Bay area will be improved as the Qianhai section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway will be set below the water’s surface.
