Enterprises in the Qianhai and Shekou free trade area have undergone rapid development in a business environment that has kept improving.

China Commercial Lam Lee Lai Lawyers, the first Guangdong-Hong Kong joint law firm on the Chinese mainland, has provided clients with professional legal services covering finance, securities, real estate and intellectual property rights. Established in Qianhai in 2014, the law firm has over 80 professional lawyers, including 12 from Hong Kong and Macao and more than 40 from foreign countries such as the U.S., the U.K. and Singapore.

Wang Shouqun, senior partner of the firm, said that Shenzhen and Qianhai have been creating a favorable legal environment for foreign, Hong Kong and Macao-funded businesses. “The government’s support to financial institutions, private equity investors and high-tech business incubator has also created a desirable growing environment for companies,” she said.

Over the past year, Shenzhen has rolled out a series of laws and policies catering to Hong Kong and Macao legal professionals who practice law on the mainland, which was once impossible. Mainland judges also got the opportunity to learn some advanced court trial experience from their Hong Kong and Macao counterparts.

This year, Wang has been designated as a member of the city’s business environment decision-making and advisory committee. Wang said she wants to help bring in more Hong Kong and foreign-funded companies, talent and capital to the mainland through her suggestions.

GJS Robot, a startup at the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneur Hub, has had its products sold in eight countries across the globe five years after establishment.

In July last year, GJS Robot and WCG (World Cyber Games) cosponsored a global somatosensory combat robot contest. Using GJS’s robot, a Chinese player won the championship contest. Zhao Junjian, founder and CEO of GJS Robot, said that he felt as proud as when he sees Chinese athletes win gold medals in the Olympics.

Zhao also spoke highly of the advanced manufacturing and business environment in Shenzhen. “If we had our products made in other countries, it would have taken a longer time and cost more to manufacture them, making them less competitive in the market,” Zhao said.

Winson Kwok, GJS’s Hong Kong affairs officer, said that the convenient transportation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong makes it easy for him to travel between the two cities, as it only takes him 75 minutes to travel from his home to office.

“The Qianhai authority and Shenzhen city government have offered us huge help in terms of subsidized office rent, low-rent talent housing, and other supportive policies. Qianhai is quite attractive for Hong Kong entrepreneurs.” Kwok said.
