Hong Kong youth should embrace the bigger market in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the Chinese mainland, said Wong Wai-chun, a Hong Kong civil engineer who has worked on the mainland for over 10 years.

“Hong Kong has limited space for development. It will be a good option for Hong Kong people to pursue career development in the GBA and the mainland,” Wong said.

Wong has been responsible for the construction of the Tencent Digital Tower in Qianhai. The project is regarded as a symbol of Qianhai-Hong Kong cooperation in the field of construction, with several Hong Kong professionals as project managers.

According to Wong, the Tencent project contractor has adopted Hong Kong practices in organizational structure, such as project management, while the review and approval system is in line with that of the mainland.

Wong has witnessed the tremendous changes in the infrastructure of Qianhai over the past years. “In 2014 when I came to Qianhai for the first time, there were only several buildings and infrastructure under construction,” he said, adding that now the development of Qianhai has really taken shape.

Wong has worked on the development of a number of well-known projects in Hong Kong and the mainland, including the Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong and the Sanlitun Village in Beijing after graduating with a master’s degree in the United Kingdom in 1980.

Qianhai welcomes Hong Kong professionals in various fields, such as accountants, architects, lawyers and appraisers. Now 145 Hong Kong professionals are working in Qianhai, which is home to 48 Hong Kong-funded professional institutions. As of last year, 16 projects in Qianhai have adopted the Hong Kong construction model.
