Free trade and innovation alliance inaugurated in Qianhai

A free trade and innovation alliance of 47 domestic free trade zones and 11 foreign special economic areas was established in Qianhai on Aug. 27.

The 11 overseas members are the China-Belarus Industrial Park in Belarus, Nigeria’s Lekki Free Trade Zone, the Cambodian Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, the Djibouti International Free Trade Zone in East Africa, the Sri Lankan Hambantota Port Industrial Park, the Vientiane Saysettha Development Zone in Laos, the Ethiopian Eastern Industry Zone, Thailand’s Thai-Chinese Rayong Industrial Zone, the Central European Trade and Logistics Cooperation Zone of Hungary, Egypt’s China-Egypt TEDA Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone, and the Mexican Hofusan Industrial Park.

The 58 alliance members vowed to strengthen cooperation in eight major areas: economy and trade; infrastructure construction; financial service; application of cutting-edge technologies such as big data, cloud computing and blockchain; industrial cooperation; collaborative innovation and policy exchanges; the establishment of a cross-border investment pool, a shared repository and professional think tank; and the establishment of a series of dialogue and dispute resolution mechanisms.

The alliance also pledged to build a community of common interests, common futures and common responsibilities in response to the global and regional campaigns and initiatives such as the “Belt and Road Initiative,” the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” and the “Agenda 2063 –The Africa we want.”
