Hong Kong mediator helps litigants resolve disputes

Xu Jing, an experienced Hong Kong mediator of the Qianhai Cooperation Zone People’s Court recently resolved a loan contract dispute between businessmen from Hong Kong and Taiwan at an online mediation session.

Xu was in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong businessman Duan Yongqing was at his Shenzhen home and the Taiwanese identified as Chen was in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, at the time of the mediation session. The mediation itself had been made possible by the Qianhai court’s cross-border dispute resolution service.

The Qianhai court has appointed 74 mediators from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other foreign countries to serve the diversified dispute resolution center it has set up for legal disputes involving overseas businesspeople.

Most of the mediators at the diversified dispute resolution center are lawyers, professional mediators and those who have engaged in finance and international trade on the Chinese mainland for years, according to Liu Zhe of the dispute resolution center.

Official statistics showed that as of July, 659 legal cases at the Qianhai court have been resolved through efforts by the overseas mediators.

Xu, accredited by Hong Kong Mediation Center, has 18 years of experience in Hong Kong and mainland legal affairs. She was involved in the mediation of 360 disputes of the Qianhai court in the past two years. She said she felt fulfilled every time she has helped resolve a dispute through mediation.

Xu has won the court’s honorary titles of “Gold Mediator” and “Outstanding Personnel of Litigation and Mediation.”

Now, the Qianhai, Nansha and Hengqin courts of the China (Guangdong) Pilot Free Trade Zone have shared mediation resources. The overseas mediators can conduct mediation sessions commissioned by any of the three courts.
