The development of underground space in Qianhai is an important step made by the Qianhai authority to enhance the efficiency of land use in the free trade area.

Official statistics showed that about 6 million square meters of underground space in Qianhai has been developed for an underground network accommodating vehicular, rapid transit and pedestrian traffic. Underground sidewalks extending 24.3 kilometers have been built, connecting Metro stations and bus terminals with a number of office buildings.

According to Qianhai’s land use plan, many large infrastructures including centralized cooling stations and bus terminals will be located underground to make room for other public facilities on the ground.

For example, an underground parking lot and a bus terminal will be built underneath the 79,000-square-meter Qianhai Trading Plaza in the Guiwan area. On the ground, there will be 11 buildings, including two 220-meter-high official buildings, hotels and apartment buildings. The underground parking lot spans adjacent buildings in the trading plaza to make the most use of the underground space.

The Qianhai Transport Hub, another major project with a total floor space of 2.15 million square meters, will have commercial buildings and serviced apartments on top of a six-floor below-the-ground transport hub, where three Metro lines and two planned rail lines interchange. Terminals of public buses, tourism and cross-border buses, as well as taxis will be located on the first three floors of the underground hub, while the lower three floors will offer more than 4,900 parking places.

Qianhai’s practice of intensively developing underground space has been duplicated in and promoted to nine cities in the Pearl River Delta Region and the whole country.
