A Shenzhener abroad received an electronic notary certificate produced remotely by Qianhai Notary Office on July 8.

The Shenzhen resident, identified as Jiang, has been overseas and couldn’t make his way back to Shenzhen due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So he filed with the Qianhai Notary Office for a notary certificate on a letter of attorney entrusting his family members in Shenzhen to buy an apartment for him.

The Qianhai Notary Office issued the electronic certificate, the first of its kind in Shenzhen, for Jiang through video conferencing on its self-developed online notarization platform.

The service is available to Shenzhen residents and Shenzhen-registered enterprises in foreign countries, according to the Qianhai Notary Office.

Currently, the service is only applicable to notarize letters of attorney for property disposition between spouses, parents and children, siblings and other immediate relatives. Signatures on entrustment, transfer and waiver of the right to dispose of property cannot be notarized through the online service.
