The problem of water logging and flooding in some Nanshan District areas and Qianhai during rainy seasons will be addressed while at the same time water quality of the bay area will improve after the construction on the Qianhai-Nanshan Drainage Tunnel project is completed in 2022.

Extending between the Guankou Canal in the north and the Qianwan River corridor in the southwest, the  project consists of a main tunnel, three branch tunnels, three pre-treatment stations, a rainwater pipeline and a large-scale pumping station.

The project is constructed by Qianhai Investment Holding, with a total investment of 2.41 billion yuan (US$340 million).

The 3,740-meter-long main tunnel will be about 45 meters underground, lying beneath the Metro tracks of lines 1, 9 and 11. Each of the three branch tunnels measures 900 meters while the rainwater pipeline is 4,390 meters long. The project will be able to handle 86 cubic meters of water per second after completion, according to the project manager.

Once the project is operational, wastewater and rainwater will be diverted to Nanshan Sewage Treatment Plant, and during rainy seasons, flood water will be treated and discharged through the Qianhai River corridor.

The drainage tunnel project is part of Qianhai’s efforts to improve its water quality and water environment.
