A ferry route linking Qianhai & Shekou Free Trade Area and Hengqin of Zhuhai City started service May 1.

It is the first sea link between the two free trade areas of China (Guangdong) Pilot Free Trade Zone (Guangdong FTZ) in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The Guangdong FTZ consists of Qianhai & Shekou, Hengqin and Nansha of Guangzhou.

It takes 100 minutes from the Taizi Bay Cruise Home Port in Shekou to Hengqin Port. The ferry will cross the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and sail past Macao peninsula. In contrast, it takes more than three hours to drive from Shenzhen to Hengqin.

The launch of the Shekou-Hengqin route will pave the way for the integration of tourism and other business resources in Shenzhen and Zhuhai, said Yuan Fuyong, vice director of the Qianhai Cooperation Zone Authority, which oversees the Qianhai & Shekou Free Trade Area.

Yuan said that the sea link has also expanded the growth space of the marine industry in the two cities and is conducive to the coordinated development of the Guangdong FTZ.

There will be four round-trip services on the route per day. A discounted one-way fare of 65 yuan (US$9.16) is being offered until June 30, after which a one-way ticket will cost 130 yuan.

Zhuhai’s Hengqin island is known in the Pearl River Delta area for its rich tourism resources. It is home to a number of theme parks including Zhuhai Chimelong International Ocean Resort and Sumcheetah, as well as other leisure sites and scenic spots.

Discounts on admissions to theme parks, restaurants and hotels on the Hengqin island will be offered to visitors arriving with the ferry through July 31.
