Qianhai to be a “sponge city”

Taking an ecological approach, urban planners are transforming Qianhai into a “sponge city”: a city with advanced water circulation system.

“The ‘sponge city’ has an extraordinary flexibility to adapt environmental changes and cope with natural disasters by absorbing and purifying water during rainfalls as well as retaining and releasing water when needed,” said an expert with Human Settlements and Environment Commission of Shenzhen Municipality. “Such design corresponds with an environmental-friendly principle, enabling Shenzheners to coexist with the nature in a harmonious way.”

The very beginning of the city planning embodies the “sponge-city” concept. Urban infrastructures in Qianhai have been built in favor of flood-prevention.

Other “sponge-city” related initiatives have also been put in place. For instance, the construction of the Qianhai Innovation and Business Center not only made use of over 500 containers, but lifted the sidewalk above the grassland, allowing water infiltrate into the rainfall storage system.

Besides, an increasing number of permeable and renewable bricks will be put into use. A number of cisterns are to be established in Qianhai to maximize the capacity of rainwater storage.
