The Shenzhen government is launching a large-scale urban project to utilize the underground space in Qianhai area, which will consist of underground transport networks, commercial areas and public facilities in the area, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported yesterday.
Occupying an area of 15 square kilometers, Qianhai will be a home to 150,000 residents and its estimated employed population is above 650,000 people. The shortage of land space in the area has collided with the large population in the area as 500,000 people will travel in and out the area per day, making policy makers realize the value of the underground space.
According to the government plan, there will be 6.3 million square meters of underground space available for development in Qianhai, and an area as large as 4 million square meters will be built into underground parking space. The underground public passages and commercial areas will be 1.3 million square meters, while public facilities will occupy an area of 1 million square meters.
Guo Jun, director of the construction department of Qianhai Authority, said there will be 12 railway lines and 37 stations in Qianhai area as the rail transit network is essential for the Qianhai’s transportation system, which will be able to meet the travel demand of 250,000 to 350,000 passengers during rush hours in the future.
Underground roads with an overall length of 5.5 kilometers will be built in Qianhai, which will be connected to the underground parking space in certain areas. Guo said the underground roadway system will effectively relieve the traffic pressure on the ground.
A 24.3-kilometer underground pedestrian network will be constructed to link with underground commercial areas in Qianhai, and it will cover an accessible area of 4.78 square kilometers.
A total of 13 garbage transfer stations, 11 transformer substations, 10 refrigeration stations and 39 public bus original and terminal stations will be built beneath the ground. A utility tunnel of 9.2 kilometers will be built to facilitate the construction of water pipelines and power cables.
Lin Hong, vice director of Qianhai Authority, said the underground space in Qianhai is not isolated, but it was interconnected with the urban space and its social, economic and environmental value will be maximized.
