The downtown area of Bao’an District, together with Shekou and Houhai in Nanshan District will be included in the construction of Shenzhen’s “pan-Qianhai area.”

The blueprint was raised by the city’s top government leaders at a panel discussion focusing on Qianhai on Friday.

The third plenary meeting of Shenzhen’s sixth municipal Party committee was held last week. The panel discussion Friday afternoon focused on a summary of the construction of the Qianhai-Shekou Free Trade Zone (FTZ) as well as the area’s future development.

“We feel responsible for furthering the construction of the free trade zone by incorporating several key areas into the big project and we pledge to build a world-level innovation hub that connects Guangdong Province with Hong Kong and Macao,” said Du Peng, head of the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Area Authority.

Shenzhen Vice Mayor Zhang Hu, who is also a member of the standing committee of the municipal Party committee, urged at the panel discussion that more efforts need to be made over the remaining four months of the year to meet the annual goals.

Zhang said that all of Shenzhen’s government departments and social force should make all-out efforts to construct the area.

Li Xinwei, deputy secretary general of the municipal Party committee, also advocated the proposal and said that what is necessary for the FTZ’s development is ports, airports and other infrastructure. Shenzhen should make the most of its proximity to Hong Kong and nurture the relationship between the two regions, Li said.
