K11 ECOAST, a massive retail and cultural complex located in Prince Bay, Nanshan District, opened to the public on April 28. Covering 228,500 square meters, the project includes the Art Mall, a multi-purpose art space, the K11 ATELIER office building, and a landscaped waterfront promenade.

The harbor-front destination is the first flagship commercial complex in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area that delves into the elaborate balance between architecture and nature, skillfully harmonizing architectural design with the coastal landscape and birthing a new hot spot and destination for creative culture and eco-friendly life.

Unlike traditional shopping centers, K11 ECOAST enriches the art scene of Shenzhen by holding art exhibitions, cultural forums, and immersive experiences.

The space is organized with a split-level entryway leading to areas including restaurants with 270° sea views and immersive, multi-sensory art spaces.

The HACC Art Space will showcase a collection of contemporary works from around the world and provide young Chinese artists with a platform. Meanwhile, the Art Mall will invite visitors to explore artwork that has been contributed to Shenzhen by foreign artists, including pieces by two female sculptors — Phyllida Barlow from the U.K. and Monika Sosnowska from Poland.

The design of K11 ECOAST incorporates the “sponge city” concept — its drainage system and extensive greenery function like a sponge, absorbing and permeating rainwater. The project prioritizes the use of 100% local species for landscaping to enhance biodiversity.

Furthermore, to promote a circular economy, a portion of the façade features 100% recycled glass and metal panels.

Designed by a team including OMA, David Chipperfield Architects, and Sou Fujimoto, the project has been honored with the “Mixed-Use Development of the Year-China” award at the Real Estate Asia Awards 2024 for its breakthrough innovations in sustainable development, cultural arts promotion, and integration of culture and commerce.

The Real Estate Asia Awards is a prestigious industry accolade that honors pioneers in architectural innovation, sustainability, and community impact. (Liu Yangyang)
