A seminar related to the protection of legal rights of expats working in China was held in Shekou on Nov. 30 afternoon, drawing some 30 expats.
Organized by the Shekou Foreign Legal Assistance Center, the seminar featured Li Yali, a senior partner at Beijing Long An (Shenzhen) Law Firm and a mediator at the Qianhai International Commercial Mediation Center. Li clarified questions and concerns regarding the protection of workplace rights for expats.
Li used real-life case examples to discuss major legal issues from the pre-employment, employment, and post-employment periods. She also gave a thorough explanation about how to prevent legal risks and take precautions when joining or leaving a company, aiming to help expats understand how to safeguard their legitimate rights while working in China.
Following the lecture, Li engaged in a Q&A session during which expats actively posed an array of employment-related questions, including queries about year-end bonuses upon contract termination. Specific inquiries were raised by attendees like a German resident who asked about the validity period of labor contracts and a resident from Malaysia seeking clarity on non-compete and confidentiality agreements. Li advised expats to carefully review the terms of their contracts and be aware of local policies.
Many expats continued discussions with Li about their legal concerns after the seminar, which was applauded by the attendees. “It’s very helpful, and a thank-you to Lawyer Li,” said Katia from Russia.
The seminar is part of the “One Topic One Month” series by the Shekou Foreign Legal Assistance Center, located on the first floor of the Shekou Management and Service Center for Expats, which offers basic legal support to expats in Shenzhen.
