Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport opened a waiting hall for pets and their owners — the first of its kind in China — last week that provides one-stop pet travel services for pet owners.

This hall is located in the B1 area of the airport’s domestic cargo yard. With an area of 210 square meters, the hall is equipped with a comprehensive air quality monitoring system for temperature, humidity, PM2.5 and PM10, and ammonia levels. In addition to gentle lighting, environmentally friendly materials, and a clean environment, the hall is divided into zones for dogs and cats.

The establishment of the pet waiting hall has changed the practice of mixing pets with cargo in transportation. By introducing a remote medical diagnosis system and hygiene and epidemic prevention measures based on digital platforms and IoT technology, the waiting hall offers pet boarding and pet care services to ensure the safety and comfort of pets. A pet playground helps relieve their travel anxiety.

This service is operated and supported by a professional pet technology company, which provides pets with a specialized security check-in boarding channel, personal care, regular patrols, on-demand feeding, and free boarding services for pets stranded due to flight delays.

“I feel very reassured and relieved about my pet’s travels through this service. It made me feel that Shenzhen is a city full of humanistic care,” said a passenger surnamed Liu who used the service.

Consumers opting for the travel service can use an app to track their pets throughout the journey. This service also offers pet flight bookings, transportation, pet travel crates, and quarantine services.

According to the China Development Institute, the number of pet cats and dogs in Shenzhen has exceeded 500,000.
